73rd Technical Conference and Exposition of the Grain Elevator and Processing Society in Vancouver, BC was a great success

This is only the 4th time the event has been held in Canada and this year's event has attracted delegates from 20 countries. Vancouver's importance as one of the world's top grain handling ports is well known, and the group's pre-conference tour included a visit to the Agricultural Port facilities on the waterfront. This event had special significance to our editor Jerry W. Bird, who spent much of his media career in Alberta, where he handled publicity projects for Cargill, United Grain Growers, Sunny Boy Cereals, the UFA Co-op and Alberta Agriculture, among others clients involved in the grain industry. He still thinks that grain elevators are one of the most comforting sights on the prairie landscape, and is saddened by their disappearance. At Calgary's Heritage Park, one may see the inner workings of a typical grain elevator. More information to come on this worldwide organization.

Networking: One of the events we enjoy attending and reporting on year after year for a wide variety of reasons is the Union of BC Municipalities Conference and Municipal Marketplace each fall. This year will be very timely with a new government in Victoria. Another powerful organization on the community scene is the British Columbia & Yukon Hotels' Association which has been in operation for almost a century and represents every corner of the province. Details and contacts below.

Union of British Columbia Municipalities Marketplace
Vancouver Convention Centre, September 24-28, 2001

The Municipal Marketplace Trade Show & Exhibition runs in conjunction with the Annual UBCM Convention - the main focus for policy making for B.C.'s local government. It's the place where local governments do business with provincial ministries and agencies and it's the place to be for anyone who WANTS to do business with local government. The Municipal Marketplace Opportunity: Access to all British Columbia municipalities and regional districts under one roof! Municipalities and regional districts annually spend over 3.6 Billion dollars. http://www.civicnet.gov.bc.ca/ubcm/
